SAIL Awards Contract for New Sinter Plant at IISCO Steel Plant

Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) has awarded a $34 million contract to Metso India and Outotec Germany for the construction of a new sinter plant at its IISCO Steel Plant in Burnpur, West Bengal. This strategic initiative aims to enhance the plant’s production capacity and operational efficiency, positioning it to meet the rising demand for steel in infrastructure and construction projects across the country.

The new sinter plant is expected to improve the quality of raw materials used in steel production, optimise fuel consumption, and increase overall productivity. By integrating advanced technologies and equipment provided by Metso India and Outotec Germany, the plant will benefit from improved process control, higher energy efficiency, and reduced environmental impact. The project represents a significant step in SAIL’s ongoing efforts to modernise its facilities and adopt innovative solutions that align with global best practices in steel manufacturing.

IISCO Steel Plant plays a crucial role in SAIL’s overall production network, supplying high-quality steel to various sectors including construction, railways, and urban infrastructure. The addition of the new sinter plant will not only expand capacity but also enhance the reliability and consistency of steel output, supporting India’s growing infrastructure needs.

The project is also expected to create employment opportunities during construction and operational phases, contributing to the local economy in West Bengal. Furthermore, the plant will incorporate environmentally responsible processes to minimise emissions and ensure compliance with national sustainability standards.

With this investment, SAIL continues to strengthen its position as a key player in the Indian steel industry while supporting the nation’s infrastructure development ambitions. The new sinter plant at IISCO Steel Plant is set to become a benchmark for efficiency, quality, and sustainability in modern steel production.
