The Union Cabinet has cleared the development of a four-lane section of National Highway 139W between Sahebganj, Areraj and Bettiah in Bihar. The project, sanctioned with an investment of ₹3,822.31 crore, will be executed under the Hybrid Annuity Mode and is expected to significantly improve regional connectivity and economic growth.
Officials have stated that the highway will serve as a vital transport corridor for north Bihar, linking agricultural zones with markets and urban centres. The new four lane road will reduce travel time, improve safety and enhance trade opportunities by providing faster and more reliable routes for freight movement.
The construction of the highway is also expected to create large-scale demand for steel, particularly for reinforcement bars, structural girders, crash barriers and other critical components. With India placing strong emphasis on infrastructure modernisation, projects of this scale are becoming an important driver of steel consumption across the country. Industry experts believe that the Sahebganj Bettiah project will add to the momentum of demand that the sector has been witnessing from roads, railways and urban development initiatives.
Beyond immediate economic benefits, the highway is anticipated to generate employment during the construction phase and open up opportunities for small businesses in the region once completed. Better connectivity is also expected to promote tourism and improve access to healthcare and education facilities.
The approval of the project underlines the government’s continued focus on expanding national highway capacity and strengthening rural urban integration. It forms part of a broader effort to enhance logistics, reduce congestion and support India’s long term infrastructure ambitions.
