Government Plans ₹16,000 Crore Incentive Scheme for Construction Equipment

The government is preparing an incentive scheme worth ₹16,000 crore to encourage domestic production of critical construction equipment, including tunnel boring machines, cranes, and other large-scale machinery vital for infrastructure development. The initiative is designed to reduce dependence on imports, speed up project execution, and strengthen the steel-intensive equipment supply chain.

Officials highlighted that India’s infrastructure push requires a steady supply of specialised machinery, much of which is currently sourced from overseas. By promoting indigenous manufacturing, the scheme is expected to not only lower costs but also enhance project timelines by ensuring faster equipment availability.

Industry analysts say the move will provide a significant boost to the domestic steel sector, as construction equipment manufacturing relies heavily on high-quality steel for structural strength, durability, and performance. Increased demand for such machinery is likely to translate into greater steel consumption, particularly in segments such as heavy plates, beams, and specialised alloys.

The scheme also aligns with the government’s broader vision of promoting self-reliance under its industrial strategy. Localising production of advanced equipment will not only reduce foreign exchange outflow but also create jobs, foster technology transfer, and encourage the development of supporting industries across the country.

Experts caution, however, that successful implementation will require coordinated efforts in terms of research and development, standardisation, and financing. Strengthening the domestic ecosystem for high-precision engineering will be crucial to ensuring that Indian-made equipment can compete with international benchmarks on performance and reliability.

If implemented effectively, the proposed ₹16,000 crore scheme could mark a turning point for India’s infrastructure and manufacturing sectors, with positive spillovers for the steel industry as the backbone of construction and equipment production.
