The Ministry of Railways has approved the construction of a Road Over Bridge (ROB) worth ₹118 crore at Mukuria, near Katihar Junction in the Northeast Frontier Railway zone. The project is set to replace an existing level crossing on National Highway 31 and State Highway 98, which has long been a source of congestion and delays for both road users and train operations.
Once completed, the ROB will significantly ease traffic flow in the busy region, offering a safer and faster route for motorists and pedestrians. The structure is expected to not only reduce waiting times at the level crossing but also minimise the risk of accidents, particularly during peak hours when heavy vehicular traffic coincides with frequent train movement.
Officials have confirmed that planning and tendering processes are already underway, with construction likely to commence in the near future. The bridge will be designed to accommodate current and projected traffic volumes, ensuring long-term utility for the region’s growing population and expanding transport needs.
The project forms part of the railways’ broader efforts to enhance connectivity and safety by systematically eliminating level crossings across the country. By investing in grade-separated infrastructure, the ministry aims to improve road and rail efficiency while also addressing long-standing public safety concerns.
Local residents and commuters have welcomed the approval, noting that the existing crossing often causes long traffic queues and disrupts daily travel. With the ROB, they expect improved mobility, reduced travel times, and smoother logistics for goods transportation along this critical corridor.
The new bridge is anticipated to be a crucial infrastructure upgrade for Katihar and surrounding areas, strengthening regional connectivity while supporting economic activity and ensuring safer journeys for thousands of daily commuters.
