The Maharashtra Cabinet has approved a ₹6,500 crore mega project to transform Hingna taluka into a modern smart industrial and corporate hub, marking a major step in Nagpur’s urban and economic development.
The ambitious “New Nagpur” project will incorporate state-of-the-art infrastructure, sustainable planning, and integrated urban services. One of its most striking features will be India’s first underground utility tunnel, designed to streamline essential services such as power lines, water supply, and telecommunications, thereby reducing surface-level disruption and enhancing efficiency.
Alongside the tunnel, the project will emphasise green planning, with dedicated zones for parks, environmentally friendly buildings, and sustainable transport systems. The initiative also aims to attract investment in technology, manufacturing, and corporate services, positioning Nagpur as a key centre for industrial growth and innovation in the region.
Officials believe that the project will generate significant employment opportunities, both during the construction phase and once industries and services are operational. By integrating smart planning with industrial development, “New Nagpur” is expected to deliver long-term economic benefits while reducing the environmental footprint of urban expansion.
Experts point out that the project aligns with Maharashtra’s broader strategy to boost industrial hubs outside Mumbai and Pune, diversifying growth across the state. For Nagpur, already gaining recognition as a transport and logistics centre, the initiative could reinforce its role as a regional growth engine.
The approval of “New Nagpur” underscores the state government’s commitment to future-ready infrastructure, blending advanced technology with sustainable urban development. By combining industrial strength with smart city features, the project is set to provide a model for integrated urban-industrial ecosystems across India.
