The Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation (MahaMetro) has initiated the detailed project report (DPR) process for the extension of the Nagpur Metro’s Kamptee corridor, which will include a 500-metre steel viaduct across the Kanhan River. The 1.3-kilometre extension, estimated to cost around ₹300 crore, is expected to add a new station and take the total length of Phase 2 to more than 45 kilometres.
MahaMetro has already completed over 90 per cent of land acquisition for the project, paving the way for rapid progress in civil works. Once completed, the extension is projected to ease congestion on key routes, improve connectivity for commuters, and provide a more sustainable public transport alternative for the city’s growing population.
The use of a steel viaduct for this section has been highlighted as a key engineering feature, designed to ensure durability and structural stability while minimising disruption during construction. Steel structures have increasingly become an integral part of metro projects in India, offering faster installation times and greater adaptability to challenging terrains.
Officials noted that the extension forms a crucial link in Nagpur’s expanding metro network, which aims to provide efficient, modern, and environmentally friendly transport infrastructure. With the city experiencing rapid urbanisation, the expanded metro system is expected to reduce reliance on private vehicles, cut travel times, and lower overall traffic pollution.
Industry experts view the integration of steel structures in metro projects as a strong indicator of the material’s importance in India’s infrastructure growth. The project not only supports the city’s urban development plans but also underscores the role of steel in enabling complex, large-scale transport systems.
