The government has approved eight Rail-Over-Rail (ROR) projects in the South Central Railway (SCR) zone, aimed at reducing congestion on some of the busiest stretches and ensuring smooth operations for both passenger and freight trains. These projects carry a combined investment outlay of ₹6,584 crore, signalling a major infrastructure boost for the region.
Among the key developments is a 37-kilometre bypass line between Kazipet and Warangal, which will play a pivotal role in easing rail traffic on the corridor. In addition, ROR construction is planned near Pagidipalli, while several bypass-cum-ROR alignments are being integrated with the Regional Ring Road, strengthening connectivity around Hyderabad. Collectively, these measures are expected to significantly reduce congestion for trains heading towards the state capital and beyond.
Officials have stated that the projects are designed to not only streamline operations but also support the increasing demand for freight movement, particularly with the steady growth in industrial activity. Freight trains often face bottlenecks on shared passenger corridors, and the new alignments are expected to reduce delays while improving efficiency in goods transportation.
The projects also highlight the broader emphasis on modernising railway infrastructure to support India’s economic growth. By introducing advanced structural solutions like ROR systems, the SCR zone is expected to achieve faster turnaround times and better utilisation of rail assets. Importantly, completion timelines for these initiatives have been set within two to three years, underscoring the urgency of addressing rail capacity constraints in the region.
With these investments, the South-Central Railway is poised to become a critical backbone for industrial and passenger mobility in southern India, ensuring that the rail network keeps pace with the demands of a rapidly expanding economy.
