Google’s $6 Billion Hyperscale Data Centre Set to Transform Andhra Pradesh’s Digital Hub

Google has announced a $6 billion investment to establish a 1 GW hyperscale data centre in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. This will be Google’s first major data centre in India and the largest in Asia. Of the total investment, around $2 billion will be allocated to renewable energy infrastructure to ensure the facility is powered sustainably. The project is expected to play a key role in meeting India’s growing cloud and AI‑driven data requirements while aligning with global sustainability goals.

The Andhra Pradesh government is aiming to position the state as a major data centre hub, targeting 6 GW of total capacity in the next five years. It has already secured commitments for around 1.6 GW, with plans to operationalise a significant portion within two years. India’s data centre industry has attracted nearly $15 billion in investment since 2020 and is projected to see another $20–25 billion by 2030, with overall capacity expected to more than triple to 4.5 GW by the end of the decade.

The construction of this massive facility will generate significant demand for structural steel, including materials for foundation reinforcement, server hall frameworks, power and cooling infrastructure, and modular building components. With hyperscale facilities increasingly adopting pre‑engineered steel building (PEB) solutions, the project presents a major opportunity for India’s steel producers to supply high‑quality, sustainable materials for fast‑track construction.

This investment marks a critical milestone for India’s digital economy while driving steel demand through the creation of large‑scale, green‑powered infrastructure. It also signals Andhra Pradesh’s emergence as a key player in the global cloud and AI infrastructure supply chain.
