Railway Expansion at Gonda–Burhwal to Boost Steel and Freight Movement

In a significant infrastructure development, the Railway Board has approved the construction of a fourth railway line between Gonda and Burhwal in Uttar Pradesh, spanning 55.75 km at an estimated cost of ₹796 crore. This move is expected to drastically enhance freight and passenger capacity along one of the busiest high-density corridors in North India. According to reports by, the project is aimed at facilitating faster transportation of key commodities such as steel, coal, cement, and food grains, aligning with India’s infrastructure growth and logistics efficiency goals.

Simultaneously, work is advancing on the third line project between Gonda and Burhwal, sanctioned at a higher outlay of ₹1,117 crore. A major milestone was recently achieved with the successful launching of steel girders over the Ghaghra (Saryu) River, a critical component in completing the new rail bridge on this stretch. This achievement signifies rapid progress on the structural elements of the project, which is expected to become operational later this year.

Railway officials emphasized the strategic importance of the Gonda–Burhwal section, which falls under the Lucknow division of the North Eastern Railway. The corridor is vital for ensuring uninterrupted movement of industrial goods, especially bulk steel shipments from eastern India to the northern regions. With the addition of the fourth line, the corridor’s freight capacity is projected to increase by over 75 per cent, significantly reducing congestion and transit delays.

These parallel upgrades underscore the government’s commitment to modernizing rail infrastructure, improving last-mile connectivity, and supporting core industries such as steel and cement with more efficient supply chains.
