The Indian government is expected to announce a comprehensive five-year package in the Union Budget 2025 to enhance metro and rapid rail connectivity. This initiative aims to tackle urban congestion and improve public transport infrastructure across the country.
India currently has around 1,000 km of operational metro and rapid rail networks across 23 cities in 11 states, with another 985 km under construction. The proposed plan seeks to double this network over the next five years, solidifying India’s position as the third-largest metro rail system globally.
The Centre’s commitment to metro expansion is reflected in the Rs 24,785.94 crore capital expenditure allocated in the 2024-25 budget for mass rapid transit and metro projects. The upcoming budget is expected to introduce significant measures to strengthen central and state partnerships in metro development.
With increasing urbanisation, enhancing metro connectivity remains a priority for sustainable city growth. The planned investment in metro and rapid rail projects is expected to boost economic activity, create jobs, and provide a more efficient transit system for millions of commuters.
