Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has announced ambitious infrastructure initiatives to drive the state’s development in 2025. Key focus areas include improving air connectivity, building medical colleges, enhancing road networks, and developing new government administrative facilities.

Highlighting the importance of air connectivity, Sangma confirmed efforts to make Umroi Airport operational for commercial flights. With technical assessments showing feasibility for larger aircraft like the A320, airlines such as IndiGo and SpiceJet have expressed readiness to begin operations once runway upgrades are completed. Additionally, air connectivity between Shillong and Tura will improve under the Government of India’s UDAN scheme.

In healthcare, the Shillong Medical College is expected to launch by September 2025, while the government is addressing manpower challenges to operationalize Tura Medical College. These institutions aim to strengthen healthcare services and education across the state.

The government will also lay the foundation stone for a new Secretariat at Mawdiangdiang on Meghalaya Day, January 21, with parts of the project expected to be completed within two years. Meanwhile, the Rs 120 crore Mini Secretariat project in Tura is advancing to bring administrative services closer to people in key regions like Jowai and Pynursla.

Major road projects include the Rs 24,000 crore Expression Corridor, which will connect Umiam to Rattacherra and extend into Assam, marking one of the state’s largest infrastructure undertakings.

With these initiatives, the Meghalaya government aims to enhance connectivity, improve healthcare, and modernize governance to meet the state’s developmental goals.
