The Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) has set an ambitious target to complete the city’s metro rail network by 2027. The project’s first phase, with an estimated cost of Rs 6,255.94 crore, will span 26 kilometers, featuring 20 stations that will serve important locations, including educational institutions, hospitals, and commercial areas.

Currently, soil testing for elevated track and station construction is underway, while work on the metro’s maintenance depot and command center at Ratagada Lenkasahi has also started. The command center, with a budget of Rs 300 crore, will include both construction and equipment installations. BMRC CEO Kalyan Pattnaik announced that construction of elevated tracks is set to begin in April 2024, aiming for completion by December 2027, assuming no significant delays.

Precast structures are already being prepared at a casting yard in Malipada. The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) is overseeing the project, with contracts awarded to Ranjit Buildcon Ltd and Ceigall India Ltd for the first phase. The metro will feature elevated tracks that span major flyovers, and metro stations will be at least 13 meters above ground. Initial tenders have been issued for 13 metro trains, each with three coaches. The first line will connect Bhubaneswar airport to Trisulia, with future expansions planned to reach Cuttack, Khurda, and Puri.
