A spokesperson for the Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) announced the completion of 20 km of Phase 2 of the Chennai Metro Rail project. This milestone spans various parts of the city and suburbs, connecting at least 25 localities. Construction, which began three and a half years ago, includes both upline and downline sections, with 10 km above ground and 10.77 km underground.
Phase 2 encompasses 116.1 km and 118 stations across three corridors, with a notable 42.6 km subterranean segment connected by 45 stations. The spokesperson highlighted that lines are being installed in small sections. Around 47 stations are currently under construction, with work at various stages, including entry/exit installations and substructure or superstructure developments.
The newly connected localities include Manapakkam, Mugalivakkam, Ramapuram, Kovilambakkam, Perumbakkam, Porur, Thelliagaram, Iyyappanthangal, Kattupakkam, Poonamallee, Alapakkam, Shastri Nagar, Retteri, PTC Colony, Okkiyampet, Karapakkam, Okkiyam Thoraipakkam, Vadapalani, Madhavaram, and Venugopal Nagar.
M A Siddique, CMRL’s Managing Director, stated that Phase 2 will be completed in stages between 2026 and 2028. The segment connecting Porur and Poonamallee is expected to open by the end of 2025, while the Thirumayilai metro, an interchange between corridors 3 and 4, will be the last to open in 2028.
Some areas, such as OMR and Mylapore, have faced delays. Construction in OMR’s Sholinganallur to Siruseri SIPCOT segment was paused due to contract issues, but CMRL assures that work will resume shortly. In Mylapore, construction was halted following a judicial challenge by shopkeepers against their eviction order.
