In a significant step towards enhancing India’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities, Tata Group has started building a ₹27,000-crore semiconductor assembly and test facility in Assam. The Bhumi Pujan ceremony, held on Saturday in Jagiroad, Morigaon district, saw the presence of Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, and Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran.

The new facility, which will produce 4.83 crore semiconductor chips daily, is slated to be operational by 2025. Union Minister Vaishnaw emphasized that the plant would utilize indigenously-developed technologies, reinforcing India’s self-reliance in semiconductor manufacturing. He noted that the uniqueness of the plant lies in deploying three major technologies developed in India.

The chips from this facility will support various sectors, including electric vehicles, communication, and network infrastructure. Vaishnaw highlighted the foundational nature of the semiconductor industry, predicting substantial downstream and upstream employment opportunities as the ecosystem grows around the plant.

N Chandrasekaran announced that the plant is expected to create 27,000 jobs, including 15,000 direct and 12,000 indirect positions. He expressed Tata Group’s intention to accelerate the building of the factory, aiming for completion and operational commencement sometime in 2025.

Approved by the Union Cabinet on February 29, 2024, this project is part of the India Semiconductor Mission, aiming to develop talent and infrastructure for the semiconductor industry. Nine institutes in the northeast, including NITs and North Eastern Hill University, are actively involved in talent development for this sector.

Assam Chief Minister Sarma expressed his gratitude, describing the event as a “golden day” for Assam. He assured Tata Group of full support in setting up the facility, highlighting its transformative impact on the state’s industrial landscape and employment opportunities for the youth.

Additionally, Tata Electronics is setting up India’s first wafer fabrication unit in Dholera, Gujarat, with an investment of ₹91,000 crore, expected to produce 50,000 wafers per month by December 2026.
