India has announced plans to develop community infrastructure projects in the Marshall Islands as part of its outreach to the Pacific region. The projects, which include the construction of a community sports centre, an airport terminal, and two community centres, were formalized with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). This initiative is part of India’s annual grant-in-aid program. Additionally, New Delhi is working to provide desalination and dialysis units to address healthcare needs in the Marshall Islands.
At the MoU signing ceremony, Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar stated that they will provide better infrastructure for the people of the Marshall Islands. India recognizes the priorities and needs of the Pacific island nations. He highlighted sectors such as healthcare, affordable medicines, wellness and lifestyle, centres of excellence, education and capacity building, SME development, renewable energy, and clean water facilities as key areas of cooperation between India and the Pacific.
Recently, India also extended immediate relief assistance worth $1 million to Papua New Guinea following deadly landslides, further demonstrating its commitment to supporting Pacific nations.
