World Steel Association appoints new heads, India’s TV Narendran is VC

Global steel industry organization World Steel Association (worldsteel) announced its new leadership team for the 2023/2024 term. Leon Topalian, President & CEO of Nucor Corporation, was elected as Chairman, while T V Narendran, MD & CEO of Tata Steel, and Jeong-Woo Choi, CEO of POSCO Holdings, were appointed as Vice-Chairmen. Narendran was also added to the Executive Committee, alongside Sajjan Jindal, CMD of JSW Steel, and L N Mittal, Executive Chairman of ArcelorMittal. Mark Vassella, MD & CEO of BlueScope Steel Ltd, will serve as Treasurer, and Timoteo Di Maulo, CEO of Aperam, has been named Chairman of worldstainless.

The Executive Committee includes Salah AL-Ansari, President of Hadeed; David Burritt, President and CEO of United States Steel Corporation; UÄŸur Dalbeler, CEO of ColakoÄŸlu Metalurji AÅž; Eiji Hashimoto, Representative Director and President of Nippon Steel Corporation; HU Wangming, Chairman of China Baowu Steel Group Corporation; Andre Bier Gerdau Johannpeter, Executive Vice Chairman of Gerdau SA; and Yoshihisa Kitano, President & CEO of JFE Steel Corporation. The Committee also features Alexey A Mordashov, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Severstal (PAO); Paolo Rocca, President and CEO of Techint Group; YU Yong, Chairman of HBIS Group Co; and Hubert Zajicek, Member of the Board and CEO of Steel Division, voestalpine AG.

Edwin Basson, Director General of World Steel Association, was appointed as Secretary. Established in 1967 and headquartered in Brussels, worldsteel represents approximately 85% of the world’s steel production, with over 160 steel producers, national and regional steel industry associations, and steel research institutes among its members. It focuses on key strategic issues affecting the steel industry, with a particular emphasis on economic, environmental, and social sustainability.
