Enlight Metals Launches Waste-Free Steel Initiative

Enlight Metals has introduced the Waste Free Steel (WFS) initiative, an AI-enabled procurement model aimed at improving efficiency and reducing material wastage across India’s infrastructure and engineering sectors. The initiative shifts steel sourcing from conventional volume-based purchasing to drawing-based procurement, ensuring materials are supplied according to precise engineering requirements.

Under the WFS model, project drawings and technical specifications are analysed to determine exact steel grades, dimensions and component requirements. These inputs are then optimised using advanced planning and nesting techniques to maximise utilisation and minimise offcuts. Steel is subsequently processed through precision technologies such as Cut-to-Length (CTL), Cut-to-Size (CTS) and fibre laser cutting, delivering fabrication-ready components aligned with project needs.

The company estimates that the approach can reduce steel wastage by around 8–10 per cent, particularly in large infrastructure and EPC projects where inefficiencies from standard mill sizes often lead to trimming losses, excess scrap and idle inventory.

Commenting on the initiative, Vedant Goel said the model focuses on precision-driven supply aligned with engineering intent, improving capital efficiency while supporting sustainability by reducing unnecessary scrap generation and embedded carbon emissions.
