JSW Steel has reported consolidated crude steel production of 23.66 lakh tonnes, reflecting a 2% year-on-year decline. The slight drop was mainly due to the ongoing upgrade of Blast Furnace-3 at the Vijayanagar steel plant and temporary disruptions at the company’s US operations caused by severe winter weather.
Production from the company’s Indian operations stood at 23.06 lakh tonnes, compared with 23.32 lakh tonnes in the same period last year, marking a marginal 1% decline. The reduction is largely linked to the shutdown of Blast Furnace-3 at Vijayanagar, which is currently undergoing expansion and modernisation. The company noted that if last year’s BF-3 output is excluded from the comparison, production would have shown around 8% growth, supported by the ramp-up of JSW Vijayanagar Metallics Limited (JVML). Capacity utilisation across Indian facilities remained strong at 97%, excluding BF-3 capacity.
At the company’s Ohio facility in the United States, output fell to 0.60 lakh tonnes, down from 0.75 lakh tonnes previously, as operations continue to stabilise following caster upgrades and weather-related disruptions.
JSW Steel currently operates with a 35.7 MTPA consolidated capacity and plans to expand this to 48.9 MTPA in the coming years.
