The first phase of the Bhubaneswar Metro Rail project is slated for completion by December 2027, according to Bhubaneswar MP Aparajita Sarangi. Covering 26 kilometers with 20 stations, the metro will reflect Odisha’s rich cultural heritage. Estimated at Rs 6,256 crore, the project will operate 13 trains, each equipped with three coaches, and is expected to accommodate 95,000 daily passengers.
Sarangi confirmed that the required land has been acquired, with additional land allocation in progress. The state government will fully fund the first phase, while central government support may be evaluated later. Once operational, the metro aims to alleviate traffic congestion and provide Bhubaneswar with a sustainable urban transportation solution.
In addition to addressing the city’s growing mobility needs, the project is expected to stimulate economic growth by creating jobs during its construction and operation phases. The metro system will also promote eco-friendly commuting, helping to reduce carbon emissions and support Odisha’s sustainability goals.
