Cargo Matters Commissions ₹318 Crore Electric Bus Plant in Belagavi, Karnataka

Cargo Matters has launched an electric bus manufacturing facility in Belagavi, Karnataka, with an investment of ₹318 crore, marking the company’s formal entry into India’s electric commercial vehicle segment. The plant will initially focus on intercity electric buses featuring battery packs exceeding 800 kWh, targeting running costs of ₹17–₹20 per kilometre, significantly below comparable premium diesel coaches.

The company intends to serve both external fleet operators and its own logistics operations as part of a vertically integrated EV ecosystem, with future expansion planned into long-haul electric trucks and urban delivery vehicles. The intercity segment is the immediate priority, where fleet operators are increasingly evaluating EVs on operating economics rather than upfront acquisition cost.

The Belagavi facility positions Cargo Matters within a rapidly consolidating electric commercial vehicle manufacturing landscape in India, where policy support, advancing battery technology, and sustained pressure on fleet operating costs are collectively accelerating the transition away from diesel-powered commercial transport.
