PPG Introduces Fast-Curing Low-VOC Primer for Structural Steel

PPG Industries has launched a new generation of waterborne shop primers designed to enhance corrosion protection and improve fabrication efficiency for structural steel components. The newly introduced PPG Aquacron Waterborne Shop Primers deliver rapid curing, a smoother finish and significantly lower volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions.

Developed for factory application, the coating protects structural elements such as beams, purlins, joists and framing from flash rust and corrosion that can occur during outdoor storage at construction sites. The primer forms a water-resistant protective layer, reducing the need for extensive surface preparation or sandblasting before the final top-coat application.

The formulation addresses key limitations of conventional waterborne primers. While traditional products may require 12 to 24 hours to fully cure, the Aquacron WSP primers can cure in about two minutes under standard heat conditions. This enables steel fabricators to increase production throughput and reduce the floor space required for drying and curing.

The low-VOC formulation also supports compliance with tightening environmental regulations while maintaining performance across varying temperature and humidity conditions, reinforcing efforts to improve durability, operational efficiency and sustainability in steel fabrication.
