The Union Cabinet, chaired by Narendra Modi, has approved the declaration of Madurai Airport as an international airport, marking a significant step in strengthening connectivity and economic prospects in southern Tamil Nadu. Located in the historic temple city of Madurai, the airport is among the oldest in the state and serves as a key aviation gateway for the region.
The elevation to international status is expected to boost tourism, particularly pilgrimage travel, while facilitating greater trade and business engagement with global destinations. Officials noted that enhanced connectivity will support Madurai’s long-standing cultural and economic significance while accelerating regional development.
