The Union Territory Administration of Chandigarh is planning to integrate the city’s urban infrastructure with tourism development to strengthen its position as a major visitor destination. The decision emerged during a review meeting of ongoing and proposed projects involving officials from the Tourism Department, the Chandigarh Industrial and Tourism Development Corporation (CITCO), the Culture Department and other agencies.
UT Tourism Secretary Syed Abid Rasheed Shah directed officials to develop models that connect the city’s well-planned urban framework and modern infrastructure with tourism promotion, helping reinforce Chandigarh’s distinctive identity.
Discussions during the meeting focused on the revitalisation of Sector 17, enhancement of public amenities, installation of smart signage, improved parking management and the expansion of cultural activities to attract visitors throughout the year.
Plans were also reviewed to upgrade facilities at major attractions such as the Capitol Complex, Government Museum, Sukhna Lake and Rock Garden, with emphasis on improving accessibility, wayfinding and crowd management.
The administration also highlighted recent upgrades at Sector 17 Plaza, including a floor fountain, amphitheatre, ambient lighting and projector mapping, aimed at blending heritage character with modern urban amenities.
