AAI Conducts Pre-Feasibility Study for Proposed Airport in Andhra Pradesh

Following a request from the Andhra Pradesh government made in January 2026, the Airports Authority of India (AAI) has conducted a pre-feasibility study for proposed airport sites at Kuppam, Srikakulam and Ongole.

Andhra Pradesh has submitted proposals seeking site clearance for greenfield airports at Kuppam and Srikakulam under the Greenfield Airports (GFA) Policy-2008. The proposals are currently under consideration by the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

Under the GFA Policy, the airport developer or State government is responsible for implementation, including land acquisition, funding, and rehabilitation. Timelines depend on land acquisition, clearances, and financial closure, and new airports must generally be at least 150 km from existing civilian airports, though exceptions are considered on a case-by-case basis.

Greenfield airport proposals require ‘Site Clearance’ and ‘In-Principle’ approval from the Ministry of Civil Aviation. Under the RCS-UDAN scheme, unserved and underserved airstrips are developed through a demand-based bidding process.

Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol shared these details in response to a question by YSRCP MP PV Midhun Reddy in the Lok Sabha on airport development in Andhra Pradesh.
