The Principal Chief Engineer of Kolkata Metro has recently issued a tender for the civil construction work on the Kolkata Metro Line-4’s underground extension from Biman Bandar (Kolkata Airport) to Birati. This contract involves constructing a 3.59 km metro tunnel and developing an underground station at Birati, along with underground construction work at both Birati and Michael Nagar stations.

As part of the broader extension of the Yellow Line to Barasat in the north-east, the tunnel along Kolkata Airport’s boundary will be built using the RCC box-pushing method without deploying tunnel boring machines (TBMs). The Birati station, on the other hand, will be constructed using the cut & cover method.

The tender, listed as EPC-2489-2024, is estimated to cost ₹1,330.47 crore, with the project expected to take approximately 910 days (2.5 years) to complete. A pre-bid meeting is scheduled for September 6, 2024, and the bid submission deadline is set for November 5, 2024. The scope of work includes the design, procurement, and construction of the RCC box metro tunnel, as well as the installation and integration of track systems, E&M systems, tunnel ventilation, and the 750 V DC Third Rail within the 3.59 km tunnel.

Additionally, the contract covers architectural finishing, firefighting systems, water supply, sanitary installation, drainage, BLT works, E&M services, ECS, TVS, and power supply systems, alongside all ancillary works for extending the Metro Railway from Noapara to Barasat via Biman Bandar.

Kolkata Metro’s Yellow Line, currently under construction, stretches 6.87 km from Noapara to NSCBI Airport (Biman Bandar) and includes four stations. The extension will add 11.26 km and six stations, with work underway on the 3.6 km underground section.

Following the necessary airport clearances, Kolkata Metro has officially extended its Yellow Line to Birati, marking a significant milestone in the city’s transit network. This extension, which now includes the Birati station, is expected to ease traffic congestion and provide a more efficient alternative to road travel. The airport clearance was crucial in ensuring the extension met all safety and operational standards.

This development aligns with Kolkata Metro’s broader goal of increasing accessibility, reducing travel time, boosting local economies, and improving urban mobility by integrating more neighborhoods within the metro network.
