Tata Power Renewable Energy Limited (TPREL) has commissioned the 126 MW Omkareshwar Floating Solar Project in Madhya Pradesh, one of India’s largest floating solar installations. The Rs 5.96 billion project, awarded by NHDC Limited, supplies clean energy to Madhya Pradesh Power Transmission Company Limited (MPPTCL).

Located in Khandwa district between the Indirasagar and Omkareshwar hydroelectric reservoirs, the project faced challenges such as fluctuating water levels, strong winds, and difficult access. Despite these obstacles, TPREL completed the project in 26 months. The installation, comprising 213,460 bifacial glass-to-glass modules, generates 204,580 MWh annually, offsetting about 173,893 tonnes of CO₂ emissions each year.

Spanning 260 hectares, the plant incorporates advanced solutions like mooring systems, wave breakers, ballast anchors, and adaptive cableways. It also features the world’s largest floating platform for inverters, contributing to water conservation by reducing evaporation, saving approximately 32.5 million cubic meters of water annually.

This project further strengthens TPREL’s renewable energy portfolio, bringing its total capacity to 10.9 GW, with 5.6 GW under implementation.
