The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) has announced plans to acquire nearly 9,100 acres of land in Chamorshi tehsil of Gadchiroli district to facilitate the setting up of a massive steel plant by JSW. The proposed facility is expected to have an annual production capacity of 25 million tonnes, making it one of the largest steel plants in the world.
The estimated investment in the project is around ₹1 lakh crore. Authorities believe that this initiative will not only transform Gadchiroli into a significant industrial hub but also bring large scale economic benefits to the region. The project is being closely linked with the state’s strategy to boost industrial growth in less developed areas while tapping into natural and logistical advantages.
For JSW, this marks a major step in expanding its steelmaking capacity in line with India’s growing demand for steel in infrastructure, housing, transport and manufacturing sectors. The project is also expected to create substantial employment opportunities, both directly at the plant and indirectly through ancillary industries and services.
Officials from MIDC have highlighted that special attention will be given to land acquisition and rehabilitation, given the size of the project and its location in a district with sensitive socio-economic dynamics. The scale of the planned facility underlines the importance of steel in driving India’s future growth and its role in supporting the country’s broader vision of becoming a global manufacturing hub.
Industry experts suggest that the proposed steel plant could significantly contribute to India’s overall production capacity and strengthen the supply chain for major infrastructure projects. Once completed, the facility is likely to become a key anchor for industrial activity in central India.
