Maharashtra is set to emerge as a key hub for green steel manufacturing, according to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Speaking on the state’s industrial strategy, he highlighted the government’s commitment to promoting low-carbon technologies in steel production, positioning Maharashtra at the forefront of sustainable industrial growth in India.
The state government plans to encourage investments in green steelmaking processes, including the adoption of electric arc furnaces, hydrogen-based steel production, and carbon capture, utilisation, and storage (CCUS) technologies. These initiatives aim to reduce the carbon footprint of the steel industry while supporting the country’s broader climate goals. Fadnavis emphasised that Maharashtra’s industrial infrastructure, combined with a skilled workforce and access to raw materials, makes it an ideal destination for pioneering green steel projects.
The chief minister also pointed out that the promotion of green steel aligns with the state’s economic and environmental objectives. By fostering investment in advanced steel technologies, Maharashtra expects to attract both domestic and international steelmakers, create employment opportunities, and stimulate ancillary industries such as logistics, construction, and renewable energy. These developments are expected to enhance the state’s competitiveness in the global steel market while contributing to sustainable industrialisation.
In addition, the government is considering policy incentives, including preferential access to land and financial support for firms adopting environmentally friendly steelmaking practices. By integrating sustainability into the core of industrial planning, Maharashtra aims to set a benchmark for other states and demonstrate how economic growth and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
CM Fadnavis concluded that Maharashtra is ready to play a leading role in shaping the future of green steel in India. With the right mix of technology, policy support, and industry collaboration, the state could become a model for sustainable steel production, supporting India’s transition to a low-carbon economy while strengthening its position in the global metals sector.
