Infrastructure Pipeline to Push India’s Steel Demand to 275 Million Tonnes by FY34

India’s steel demand is projected to witness strong and sustained growth over the next decade, led by infrastructure and construction, which together account for nearly 65 per cent of the country’s total steel consumption. Government projects alone contribute between 25 and 30 per cent, underscoring the central role of public investment in driving the sector.

The National Infrastructure Pipeline Initiative (NIPI), along with a series of government-backed projects in transport, housing, and energy, is expected to accelerate this growth trajectory. Projections indicate that annual steel demand could rise to between 221 million tonnes and 275 million tonnes by FY34, translating into a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5 to 7.3 per cent. This expansion is closely tied to the government’s commitment to large-scale infrastructure development and urbanisation.

Sector-wise, infrastructure demand is anticipated to grow by 8 to 10 per cent annually until FY25, outpacing the building sector, which is forecast to rise at a steady 5 to 6 per cent. This sustained growth will contribute significantly to demand volumes by FY31, with projects such as highways, metro rail, industrial corridors, and renewable energy installations fuelling the need for both long and flat steel products.

Analysts highlight that such a trajectory will not only benefit primary steel producers but also strengthen the broader value chain, including construction, mining, logistics, and manufacturing. The alignment of steel demand growth with national infrastructure priorities places the sector at the heart of India’s economic ambitions.

With robust policy backing, steady urban expansion, and rising private sector participation, the steel industry is positioned to remain a cornerstone of India’s growth story. As the country advances towards its FY34 goals, stakeholders expect steel to play a defining role in shaping its infrastructure-led transformation.
