JSW Steel, one of India’s leading steel producers, has announced an 8 per cent year-on-year (YoY) increase in crude steel production for May 2025. The company reported a total output of 22.73 lakh tonnes during the month, compared to 20.98 lakh tonnes in May 2024. The growth comes despite a planned maintenance shutdown at the Dolvi blast furnace, underscoring the resilience and operational efficiency of its domestic operations.
Indian operations contributed significantly to the overall production, accounting for 21.94 lakh tonnes—up 9 per cent from 20.13 lakh tonnes a year ago. This domestic output represents approximately 97 per cent of the company’s consolidated production for the month. Although the Dolvi blast furnace underwent a scheduled maintenance shutdown during May, resulting in a reduced utilization rate of 80 per cent, the facility was successfully restarted on May 30, paving the way for a return to full capacity in June.
JSW Steel’s US-based Ohio facility, on the other hand, saw a slight dip in output, producing 0.79 lakh tonnes compared to 0.85 lakh tonnes in May 2024. Nevertheless, the cumulative crude steel production for FY2025-26 up to May stands at 47.56 lakh tonnes—a robust 13 per cent increase from 42.18 lakh tonnes recorded in the same period last year.
The company’s total crude steel production capacity is currently 35.7 million tonnes per annum (MTPA), with 34.2 MTPA in India, including 5 MTPA under commissioning. JSW Steel has ambitious plans to increase its total capacity to 43.4 MTPA over the next three years, in line with its strategy to meet growing demand in both domestic and international markets.
