HALDIRAM’S THE NEST, KOLKATA INDIA – A confectionary major, dealing with Indian traditional food, with aspirations to roll out a signature retail chain, wished to have a symbolic cocoon.
As far as architectural aphorisms are concerned, the well-known phrase, “Less is more” seems to perfectly describe a modernist ethic. The elemental objective of the proposal was to design a sleek and elegant structure that turns heads amidst the monotonous concrete jungle of the surroundings, which would be possible exclusively by allowing a visual connectivity of the interior and exterior. In order to satisfy this objective as well, glass and steel were the only two materials that would do justice to such a vision. The structure was thereby proposed such that the boundaries seem to disappear, highlighting the glass-box cocooned-by-steel, with a vision of a permeable structure. The combination of the two materials, glass and steel, lends unparallel lightness and strength to the structure. The unique characteristic feature of steel encourages adventurous architecture and explores geometry through minimalism. Steel frames reduce the material expression to the indispensable and is best known for its clarity and accuracy. The combination of the steel members exhibits the structure as a wholesome unit holding the glass box cocooned within. Set in a street corner, the building is thus enveloped by a kind of veil which reveals and at the same time transforms the perception of what lies behind it.
