What are the major advantages of using steel vis-à-vis conventional materials?
The major advantages of using steel to other conventional materials are:
- Reduction of construction time when other conventional material takes enough time to complete the job. RCC and others take time for curing, mixing transportation, shuttering etc.
- When time reduces the return on loan if any can be reduced.
- For composite structure, can attribute better in tension, for even steel structure, the matter is same.

Structural steel can be used innovatively to provide design aesthetics and economical alternative. Like Pergola, an aesthetic part of building, or portico, or several aesthetic facia constructions can be done using steel structure. Where the construction time required is less and can be welded, joined in pieces as per aesthetical requirement easily with less manpower.
Whereas, the conventional material requires skilled labour to prepare form work, then casting, then waiting for curative time, then dismantling of shuttering, plastering etc to finish the job. This requires more cost to finish job in comparison to steel structures.
What is your take on the variety of sections/grades provided by our steel producers for various demands of creativity?
Yes, several varieties of sections/grades available in the market, hence utilisation of steel increased with increase in ample number of sections, and, grades or you can say options to provide member as per aesthetical demand or demand from structural strength point of view.
I do personally believe that steel producers should produce steel with more varieties and grades to provide designer more options to choose member as per need.
What trend are we going to witness in next 5-7 years, as far as designing structures with steel is concerned?
As per my opinion, for next 5-7 years the use of steel will increase tremendously. Specially, a major part will be used in composite sections and aesthetical components. As usual industrial structures require a lot of steel… The trend of increasing high rise buildings will certainly increase the demand of steel sections for shoring. Again, the same will be required born beautification work as well.
What should be the strategy of industry in promoting structural steel construction in India?
As per my opinion, being the core technical issue, the producers of steel should interact directly or through their business development partners with the consultants, such that consultants are able to understand the issues and can convince their clients. Secondly, the producers should arrange technical sessions to spread the required issues to the target audience.

I have designed, several steel structures, some among them are, Lalbaba Seamless Tubes Pvt Ltd, Dumdum Valves and Bearings Pvt Ltd, Maracia Industries Ltd, Chengalpet, Chennai, Apeejay logistic Park, Kalinganagar, Orissa, Ballabhgarh and Haryana, Aditi Oil limited , Gourica Auto India Ltd, Fire Skin wall for 22m, 24m and 26m dia Oil Tank of BPCL, Pragati Rice Mill, Majumder Agro Industries Pvt Ltd, Kheria Autocomp Pvt Ltd, Sanand, Gujrat etc.
This is a seamless tube factory situated in Haldia. Construction area covering production, office, utility approximately 275000 sq. ft or two lakhs seventy-five thousand sq. ft approximately. It is the steel structure covering roof and vertical side wall of height 40 ft at eves level with galvalume sheet with proper fixing. As far as the roof is concerned, we have introduced transparent polycarbonate sheets for maximum utilisation of sunlight during daytime. For creating healthy internal working environment of the factory, we have introduced mechanical ventilation system with exhaust and all. Again, the frames are designed to withstand the loads of 2 nos 5 t eot cranes in each bay. For better maintenance aspect we have introduced spray paint and proper coating to the steel structures to withstand the environmental salt effect as the structure is close to seashore.
